Hazel’s story
Hazel O'Connor rocked the 80s punk scene with her famous album "Breaking Glass" and her starring role in its movie version. But behind the fame, there's a tough story of being taken advantage of by the music industry.
Despite achieving significant fame and sharing stages with renowned bands, Hazel found herself in a tough battle with her record label over unpaid money, as they never gave her the fair share she deserved. Trying to get answers from them only led to more frustration and distrust.
It all started when she was just 24. She signed a contract without knowing she'd soon be offered a lead role in "Breaking Glass." She was pushed to sign for the sum total of £1 with threats that if she didn't do it would be the end of her career.
She tried to fight back in court in 1982, but it was tough. The label said they made loads of money from her work, but she barely saw any of it. Eventually, she settled for a tiny fraction of what she should have gotten. It's a sad example of how the music biz can chew up and spit out even its brightest stars.
In 2022, Hazel faced another tough battle, this time with her health. A brain hemorrhage left her in bad shape. Rushed to the hospital, she had to be put into a coma for a day. But she's tough, and with good care, she's slowly getting better. The biggest problem she is encountering now that she is unable to travel or work at the moment and has faced large medical bills.
Back when Hazel was touring, she always made time for her fans. After gigs, she'd stick around for ages to chat with anyone who wanted to connect. She genuinely cared about each person she met, listening intently and chatting from the heart. Donations are nice, but they're not a must. They're just a way for folks to say thanks to Hazel for being such an awesome artist and for all the love she's shown her fans over the years.
Thank you for everyone during this rough time who has shown her love and support easing some of her worries about finances.
